2015 Otterbein Summer Theatre Season
By Bruce Norris
Directed by Lenny Leibowitz
June 4-7, 11-13
A brutally funny and fiercely provocative play about race, real estate, and the volatile values of each which won nearly every honor a play can win, including the Tony Award, the Olivier Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. The play takes place in two acts 50 years apart. Act One: in 1959 nervous leaders of a well-appointed Chicago community anxiously try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. Act Two: the same house in 2009, as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. The Nerd By Larry Shue
Directed by Melissa Lusher
June 18-21, June 25-28, July 2 & 3
This extraordinarily inventive, side-splitting comedy was first presented by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, then produced in Great Britain, then went on to Broadway. The action centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he’s never met but who saved his life in Vietnam—the visitor turning out to be an incredibly inept, hopelessly stupid “nerd” who outstays his welcome with a vengeance.
The All Night Strut
Conceived and Originally Directed and Choreographed by Fran Charnas
Directed by Christina Kirk
Musical Direction by Dennis Davenport
Choreography by Stella Kane
July 9-12, July 16-18, July 23-25
Swing’s the thing in the The All Night Strut! The production moves through the Depression, World War II and the post war boom in a two-act musical celebration of the 1930’s and 40’s filled with jazz, blues, bebop and American songbook standards. Weaving together the work of legendary songwriters such as Hoagy Carmichael, Frank Loesser, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Cab Calloway and the Gershwins, the story moves through time and place to highlight a slick slice of yesteryear and capture a beloved American era.
