Master of Arts in Education

This program is designed to develop professional empowerment through study, research, and reflection. It is designed to help practicing professionals maximize the potential of all learners. The Master of Arts in Education (MAE) program is convenient and arranged to serve the needs of practicing, certified/licensed teachers. Classes are scheduled in late afternoon and evening during the school year. Day and evening classes are scheduled in summer sessions.

How to apply
- Submit an online Graduate application. Application fee is $25 for students beginning Autumn 2013.
- Submit evidence of a state-issued teaching license. Applicants who hold an Ohio teaching license should indicate the license number on the application. Applicants who hold an out-of-state license will need to provide a copy of their teaching license and official transcripts documenting completion of a bachelor’s degree. Candidates not holding a teaching certificate/license may be admitted only through special action of the Graduate Education Committee. Applicants who hold a non-standard teaching certificate/license are strongly encouraged to meet with the Graduate Education Advisor prior to enrollment in classes.
Admission Criteria
- Submit all materials listed above.
- Submit official transcripts for all previous college and/or university work. In order to be considered official, transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution to the Graduate School. If hand-delivered, transcripts must be in an unopened envelope from the issuing institution.
- Applicants must have a cumulative minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 based on the A=4.0 system. Grade Point Averages between 2.5 and 3.0 may be considered for admission on a conditional basis for candidates demonstrating particular strengths in other criteria.
- Applicants must have a cumulative minimum graduate grade point average of 3.0 based on the A=4.0 system for any previous graduate work. A minimum of 6 semester hours of graduate coursework must be completed prior to application for full admission.
- Submit one professional recommendation related to teaching success and/or qualifications to pursue graduate studies in education. Otterbein University reserves the right to contact persons providing recommendations and to contact a recommender to acknowledge receipt of a recommendation. Recommendation Form (PDF).
- Submit one academic recommendation related to academic success and/or capacity to succeed in graduate-level academic work. This recommendation should be completed by an instructor of the applicant’s graduate-level coursework. Recommendation Form (PDF).
  - Otterbein University reserves the right to contact persons providing recommendations and to contact a recommender to acknowledge receipt of a recommendation.
- Interview with the Graduate Education Advisor in the Graduate School.
- Submit an MAE application essay.

The MAE application essay has two parts:

Part I – Submit a 1 to 2-page, typed, double-spaced essay addressing the reasons why you are applying to the Master of Arts in Education Program at Otterbein University. Explain how your participation in this program would align with your professional goals. In your essay, identify the program of study you wish to complete:
- MAE in Curriculum and Instruction, Professional Development Strand
- MAE in Curriculum and Instruction, 4-5 Generalist Strand (ECHD license-holders only)
- MAE in Curriculum and Instruction, 4-6 Generalist Strand (MCHD license-holders only)
- MAE in Curriculum and Instruction, TESOL strand
- MAE in Curriculum and Instruction, Theory and Research Strand
- MAE in Reading
- MAE in Special Education
Part II – Submit a 2 to 3-page, typed, double-spaced response to the following statement: Describe a teaching strategy that you read about in a journal or learned about in a professional development session that was subsequently implemented by you. Reflect on that experience and describe what you learned from it.

Admission Criteria for International Students

Master of Arts in Education (MAE) Program: International Student Admission Requirements

This program is designed for practicing teachers to develop professional empowerment through study, research, and reflection. It aims to help practicing professionals maximize the potential of all learners. Applicants for our MAE programs should have undergraduate coursework in education equivalent to that required for teaching licensure in the United States.

What is required for admission to the MAE program?

Step 1: Submit an online application to the Graduate School https://ssb.otterbein.edu/prod/bwskalog.P_DispLoginNon
Step 2: Submit all official transcripts. A WES evaluation may be required. Transcripts should confirm that the applicant possesses (1) the equivalent of at least a GPA of 3.0 on the A=4.0 system; (2) undergraduate coursework in education equivalent to that required for teaching licensure in the United States.
Step 3: Interview with a Graduate Education Advisor. This can be done over the phone or an internet connection (such as Skype).
Step 4: a) Submit a professional recommendation form, available at http://www.otterbein.edu/Files/pdf/GradEducation/MAE-MAT-Recommendation.pdf . Ideally, this form would be completed by someone familiar with your work as a teacher. b) submit an academic recommendation http://www.otterbein.edu/Files/pdf/GradEducation/MAE-Academic-Reference-Form.pdf from a university professor who is familiar with your academic work.
Step 5: Submit an application essay.
Step 6: Provide qualifying TOEFL of ILETS scores.

Students who are admitted to the MAE program must maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average or be in jeopardy of dismissal from the program.

Once all materials are submitted to The Graduate School, your file will be reviewed for admission by the Graduate Education Admissions Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials have been submitted by the appropriate deadline.
