Ever since she was a little girl, Sarah Valero has been exploring. She was born in Virginia and raised in southern California before moving to the Westerville in 1999. Sarah has been fortunate enough to spend a few summers in the Philippines, where most of her family still lives.
Valero spent a 10-day tour in Spain and is currently studying abroad spring semester in Japan. She is involved with the International Student Association at Otterbein, along with the Peer Mentor, Shades of Success, and Heritage of Latino Americans programs. In addition, she has worked at the Center of International Education and Global Engagement Office (CIEGE).
“I love encouraging students to go study abroad because you really learn more about the world, and about yourself, in a completely different environment,” said Valero, who notes that being a two-year student coordinator for Shades of Success helped bring her Otterbein experience together.
Sarah explains that her advisor, Dr. Robinson, has been influential in helping realize her path.
“I was a quiet freshman who wanted to be involved but didn’t know how. She has supported me through academic and personal struggles and always says that I will end up being a CEO somewhere in the world. Whenever I have a moment of doubt she always seems to know what to say. And she tells the best stories!”
Sarah suggests that an incoming student should not hesitate to take a class that appears interesting during their freshman year. “Those classes can help you decide on what you want in the future, and give you a new perspective on what you already know.”
