Never underestimate the value of a friendship.
Both Khamali Bartlett, a native of Brooklyn, New York, and Michelle Baafi, a native of Bronx, New York but graduate of Westerville Central High School, have already developed a strong friendship in their first year at Otterbein.
Both have been involved with the Ubuntu Mentoring program on campus, which gives Otterbein students the opportunity to mentor students from Columbus area high schools.
“I enjoy helping others,” Barlett said. “Having the chance to affect someone’s life in a positive way and putting a smile on others’ faces is great.”
Each has also become a member of Otterbein’s African-American Student Union, while Baafi has also dedicated time to the Best of Both Worlds program, which partners Otterbein students with the disabled.
“Having the opportunity to work with disabled students has been amazing,” said Baafi. “I’ve learned a lot from them whether it’s through their background or personal interests. It’s just awesome.”
Both plan to eventually study abroad, with Khamali having her sights set on studying fashion in Florence, Italy while Michelle hopes to journey somewhere in Europe or Africa.
Khamali and Michelle have hit the ground running when it comes to shaping their Otterbein experience. The best part is, they’re just getting started.
