2016 Otterbein Summer Theatre Season
Individual Tickets on Sale May 16
Brighton Beach Memoirs
By Neil Simon
Directed by Lenny Leibowitz
June 2-5, June 9-11
There’s liver for dinner, holes in his shoes and a war on the horizon, but 15-year-old Eugene Jerome would rather think about baseball…and girls. Surrounded by his overworked mother and father, his wayward brother and a whole houseful of relatives always in the way, Eugene navigates the minefield of adolescence. Hilarious and touching, Eugene’s chronicles of his misadventures growing up in 1930s New York remind us that family is the one constant in the crazy journey of life. Hailed as Neil Simon’s “finest”, “funniest” and “richest” play, this poignant masterwork elevated Simon into the pantheon of great American playwrights.
Invention of Theater
By Sean Murphy (Otterbein Class of 2014)
Directed by Melissa Lusher
June 16-19, June 23-25
“Invention of Theater” follows a small band of characters as they discover how to create a play from scratch. In a comedic send-up of everything from Shakespeare to Mamet, Invention is a play about why theater is such a vital (and strange) element of human nature. Sean Murphy, a graduate of Otterbein University and a former Otterbein Summer Theatre Company Member, is a New York based Actor/Writer, originally from Dallas. His first play, “The Starter,” won the Fringe Favorite award at the 2015 New York Fringe Festival with an entirely Otterbein cast and crew.

Broadway's tribute to the genius of Rodgers & Hammerstein is truly A Grand Night for Singing. This Tony-nominated Best Musical shows how wonderfully timeless their music is! You'll love the sultry Andrews Sisters-esque "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair." Find out "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?," sung by a lovelorn young lad. Take delight in "Shall We Dance?" when it's a comic pas de deux. There are over 30 songs from Rodgers & Hammerstein shows, including Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music and Cinderella... It doesn't get any grander than this!
