Otterbein University to Host Screening with Chinese Filmmaker

Westerville, OH—Otterbein University will host Chou Chou, the youngest director in China, for a screening and discussion of her award-winning film, Close to the Sun, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at Riley Auditorium in the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St.

A thematically and visually arresting film, Close to the Sun is the story of a woman afflicted with an unknown disease who is searching for a final place to which to travel. She travels around the world and ends up in a remote village in Guizhou, China. Here, she discovers people belonging to the Dong ethnic minority group, whose values and way of life provide her the sense of hope and peace for which she is looking. Close to the Sun won the Directors’ Choice Award for best cinematography and the Audience Choice Award for best foreign film at the 2011 Sedona International Film Festival.

Born in 1983, Chou Chou is a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy and the youngest director in China. She is a member of the Dong, the ethnic minority group that is depicted in Close to the Sun. She will discuss her film and answer questions following the screening.

The screening and discussion with director Chou Chou, sponsored by Otterbein University and the Otterbein Films Without Borders series, is presented in conjunction with the annual China Day celebration on Feb. 4 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. at Westerville Central High School, 7118 Mount Royal Ave.

The Ohio State University will also host a screening of Close to the Sun at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, in room 180 of Hagerty Hall, 1775 College Rd., Columbus. Two screenings will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. during China Day at Westerville Central High School, with a Q&A with the director at 3:30 p.m.

OSU sponsors of Close to the Sun screenings include the Institute for China Studies; Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures; Chinese Flagship Program and National East Asian Languages Resource Center at OSU. Additional sponsors include the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School; Chinese Culture Link, Inc.; Guizhou Tourism Administration (China) and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
