Inclusive Teaching Series

Inclusive Teaching
Library 013, lower level computer classroom

Join us for these four sessions as we collaboratively explore questions of who Otterbein students are and how we can create the most inclusive and effective learning environment for them.

1. Making Your Assignments "Comprehensible"
Thursday, October 2, 4:00-5:00 pm

English language learners (ELL) often struggle with comprehending the academic language of many college-level assignments, and instructors often wonder, "What's fair?," when grading those assignments.  Join us for this interactive workshop in which we'll explore some simple strategies to help students who are English language learners (and at the same time those who are not) and discuss the issue of assessing assignments in equitable ways.  Please bring a sample assignment from your classes that you can use for the activities.

Sponsored by, Academic Support Center, Education Department, English as a Second Language and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
Facilitated by Kristy Drobney, Erin Johnson, Kathryn Plank, and Kristin Reninger

2. Teaching, Learning, and Academic Fairness: A Collaborative Discussion
Thursday, October 9, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Is this fair? What is "fair"? If I have a policy, why do I need to change it? Is my policy really necessary? If I make an exception for one student, I'll have to make exceptions for the whole class. If you've ever asked yourself such questions, join us for an opportunity to discuss case scenarios, share your experiences, discuss approaches that will create a learning environment effective for all of our students, and explore the idea of academic fairness.

3. Teaching, Learning, and Learning Differences: A Collaborative Discussion about Learning Disabilities and ADHD
Wednesday, November 5, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join us to discuss the learning differences and situations students diagnosed with Learning Disabilities and ADHD experience. Discuss the accommodations needed to help them succeed and various approaches in working with our students.

4. Teaching, Learning, and Learning Differences: A Collaborative Discussion about Autism, Psychiatric Diagnoses, and Medical Disabilities
Wednesday, December 3, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
