Merris ’33 and Carol Cornell Endowed Research Funds

Women's StudiesResearch proposals are now being accepted for the Merris ’33 and Carol Cornell Endowed Research Funds for The Study of Women in Society and Special Projects for Archive Research.

Award amount for each fund is approximately $450.00.

Merriss '33 and Carol Cornell Endowed Research Fund for the Study of Women in Society

Award is made to students, faculty or staff whose academic work includes the study of women in society, their life styles, writings and/or history of women, focusing on, but not limited to, the Cornell Diaries. Student work must include for public review a scholarly paper, exhibit, performance or project under supervision of an advisor.

Funding is to be used to promote research focused on the gift of The Lucinda Lenore Merriss Cornell Diaries and related materials in memory of Carol Cornell’s husband, Merriss, Class of 1933. Professor Cornell is grandson and namesake of Lucinda and great-grandson of Angeline Bishop Cornell, one of the first women to attend Otterbein.

Diaries contain vast and detailed description of daily life in civil war era Westerville, OH. from the perspective of women.

Professor Merriss '33 and Carol Cornell Endowed Special Project for the Archives

Award is made to students who will make necessary preparations for working on the Cornell diaries and then properly organize and index the diaries, continue to research them as necessary, and make them ready for any future possible publication(s). In addition to this priority, student(s) may work on other Cornell archival materials and “the role of women” at Otterbein as well as women in the Westerville community for genealogical and historical insights. The student is to work under the supervision of the archivist. Student(s) shall be selected annually by the librarian of the Courtright Memorial Library and Otterbein Archivist.

Funding is to be used to promote research focused on the gift of The Lucinda Lenore Merriss Cornell Diaries and related materials.
