Domestic Off-Campus Programs

Otterbein participates in four outstanding domestic off-campus programs involving academic courses and internships:

The Philadelphia Center

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors in any major are eligible to apply to the Philadelphia Center, sponsored by the Great Lakes Universitys Association. The program provides opportunities for professional and intellectual development for students in a culturally diverse environment. Otterbein art majors who have participated in this program have benefited from trips to New York museums and visits to New York artists' studios. More information is available on their site here.

McCurdy School

The McCurdy Internship provides an opportunity for teacher education candidates in all licensure areas to student teach in the Southwest. Northern New Mexico is rich in history, culture, and art, with the majority of local Hispanics tracing their ancestors back to Spanish settlers. With art, pottery, and weaving studios, several Indian pueblos, and ski resorts nearby, this experience for interns is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The McCurdy School of Northern New Mexico is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Founded in 1912, McCurdy School serves approximately 350 students in K-12 from three local cultures: Hispanic, Anglo, and Native American. Approximately 85% of the student population is Hispanic. All students speak English, though many families speak Spanish. Students represent the full range of socio-economic levels, religious orientations, and ability levels. McCurdy offers a complete program of academic and athletic opportunities for its students. AP classes in English and math are offered; Spanish is offered at all grade levels. The Washington Semester Plan

Otterbein University is a member of the Washington Semester Plan, an exciting opportunity in at American University in Washington, D.C. that offers 13 different programs for full credit.

Students in this program live in our capital for a semester while taking part in this once in a life time opportunity. Three days per week are spent on "seminar activities", which include field trips, reading assignments, discussions, debates, class presentations, and over 50 lectures by guest speakers. The other two days are spent performing an internship in an area of your choosing. You might find yourself interning for a senator, the Department of Justice, or CNN.

HECC Cross-Registration

The Higher Education Council of Columbus (HECC) was established to develop programs that benefit its member institutions and the community-at-large. It is an association of the following ten Franklin County colleges and universities:

The Columbus University of Art and Design DeVry Institute of Technology Mt. Carmel University of Nursing The Ohio State University Pontifical University Josephinum

The primary objective of cross-registration is curriculum enrichment: a student is exposed to a new area of study without having to go through the more involved steps of admission to another institution as a transient student. There is no tuition charge, but the host institution may charge other enrollment-related fees such as laboratory or parking fees. The grade and hours will be treated in the same way as if the course had been taken at Otterbein.
