Community Engagement
Students have the opportunity at Otterbein to participate in community service programs that address issues facing women and girls in our local community.
Sisters-in-Service
This community plunge gives new sorority pledges the chance to assist community partners with crafts, mailings, and other necessary activities. The women have assisted agencies such as Habitat for Humanity, Strategies Against Violence Everywhere, Holy Family Soup Kitchen, Columbus Literary Council, Hanby Arts Magnet School, and several churches and libraries.
GARA (Girls Are Really Awesome) & Girltalk
Otterbein hosts these two girl's clubs at a local middle school. Otterbein students coordinate sessions for sixth- and eighth-grade girls, where together they explore self-esteem, bullying, healthy relationships, body image, gossip, leadership strategies, career decisions and pathways to college.
The girls journal after every session, writing letters to the obstacles in their lives and create 'zine pages to provide advice to other girls who are experiencing similar challenges in their lives. The clubs recently published, Letters to 8th Graders, a collection of letters written by eighth-grade girls providing advice to new eighth graders entering school in 2012.
