Master of Arts in Teaching

For applicants who have a Bachelor’s Degree but do not have a license to teach, this Master’s degree program is designed to provide a graduate route to teacher licensure in Middle Childhood Education for grades 4-9 and for Intervention Specialist K-12 (Mild-to-Moderate and Moderate-to-Intensive). It provides a path to get both your Master’s degree and your teaching license at the same time.

Teachers interested in the Middle Childhood program select two teaching/content areas from reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Those interested in the Intervention Specialist program can earn one or both licenses: K-12 Mild-to-Moderate or K-12 Moderate-to-Intensive.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program requires a combination of graduate and undergraduate work. Contact the Graduate School advisor for personalized program requirements.

Class Scheduling

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed to be a part-time program with the majority of graduate coursework offered in the evenings. However, some undergraduate coursework required for licensure may be offered in the daytime or may be taken at another institution.

The culmination of the program requires a full-time internship in the schools during Spring semester of the final year. Most students complete the MAT in two to three years, depending on the number of hours they have to complete for licensure.

Obtaining a Teaching License with the MAT Program

The MAT program leads provides the opportunity to get your Master’s degree and a teaching license for the State of Ohio. You can select an Ohio four-year Resident Educator Middle Childhood License for grades 4-9 or a K-12 Intervention Specialist license. Additional coursework may be required for the K-12 Intervention Specialist license in order to be considered Highly Qualified in some subjects.

If you are interested in licensure in other states, it is the responsibility of the student to see that requirements of other states are met. Information on licensure may be obtained from the Division of Teacher Education and Certification of the Department of Education of the state in question. Teacher licensure is simplified in many states through Interstate Reciprocity Agreements and through graduation from Otterbein University, an institution accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Most states also require that teachers pass a teacher competency test prior to licensure, e.g. Praxis II.
