MBA Curriculum

Students earn their MBA by completing a total of 12 courses (36 credit hours).
27 credit hours must be completed at Otterbein University in order to meet the residency requirement.

Foundation Requirements (4 Courses)

The foundation component requirements can be fulfilled by taking the following courses at Otterbein (or transferred from another accredited institution) and earning a "B" or better in each:

MBA Capstone Project

Students are expected to utilize their knowledge and problem solving, creativity and soft skills obtained in the program in an actual consulting project with a client. The project is developed in a cross-functional team setting under the direction of the professor and the project manager. The course requires students to meet outside of classroom time for planning, preparation, and to meet with client representatives. Classroom time during the semester’s first half is devoted to strategy formulation issues and discussion with the client, while the second half is conducted independently under the direction of the professor. The course results in a strategic project document and a final presentation of key findings and recommendations.

MBA Areas of Focus

Healthcare Administration

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (USBLS) reports that employment of medical and health services management is expected to grow faster than average (23%) compared to all other occupations. There are also many layers of managerial and administrative roles needed throughout the entire health care system. Otterbein can offer the education and skills needed to meet the demand for employment opportunities in these areas. The strength of the MBA program coupled with a focus in Health Care Administration courses is the perfect fit for aspiring health care administrators.

Financial Economics

Financial Economics combines economics, finance, and accounting by focusing on the professional knowledge and skills that are essential to success in the financial services industry. It is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in the financial industry as a bond analyst, equity analyst, or investment portfolio manager, among other career paths. Otterbein University and Ohio University signed a collaborative agreement under which MBA students who choose an area of focus in financial economics will take the four (4) MFE courses listed below at Ohio University-Pickerington. These credit hours will be transferred to Otterbein University and applied to the MBA credit hours requirements.

  • MFE 6110 – Financial Statement Analysis
  • MFE 6500 – Fixed Income Analysis
  • MFE 6230 – Portfolio Theory
  • MFE 6440 – Financial Derivatives

Actuarial Science

Actuaries analyze statistical data, such as mortality, accident, sickness, disability, and retirement rates and construct probability tables to forecast risk and liability for payment of future benefits (Bureau of Labor Statistics). About 7 out of 10 actuaries are employed in the insurance industry. Most of the rest work for firms providing various corporate services, including actuarial consulting services. Experts predict many new opportunities will come from health service and computer service companies.

  • ASCI 5990 – Practicum in Actuarial Science 3 hrs
