Professors Receive Grants for Research

Dr. Michael Hoggarth, professor of Biology and Earth Science, received a $6,500 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for his mussel survey project. Dr. Hoggarth, assisted by Matt Thomas of The Ohio State University, will survey freshwater mussels in Middle Harbor on Lake Erie to determine the species present, relative densities and mussel bed location.

Dr. Robert Braun, assistant professor of Health and Sport Sciences, received a $3,000 grant from the Ohio Commission on Minority Health for his project titled, Columbus Area Rescue (CAR) on Obesity, 2013. The CAR on Obesity, 2013 project is designed for approximately 300 elementary school youth, primarily of African American and Somali decent who reside in the Columbus area. These students will learn the importance of physical activity and will be given resources to motivate them to exercise. Similarly, they will learn to live healthier lives through better nutrition. The program will address many topics, including the myths and realities of food addicitions and the need for physical activity.

Dr. Meredith Frey and Dr. Cynthia Laurie-Rose, both professors of Psychology, received a grant of over $225,000 from the Army Research Institute for their project titled, Predicting Success with Elementary Cognitive Tasks. This research is concerned with identifying and measuring the aptitudes and skills that are unique to the human performance requirements of Army personnel and the psychological factors that could influence recruitment, retention and Army performance.
