Otterbein stands with our DACA students: A statement from President Krendl.

Otterbein University

Dear Otterbein Students, Faculty and Staff:

Two weeks ago, hundreds of students made their way to Otterbein University for the start of a new semester.  For some, this was a return to a familiar place.  For others, it was the beginning of something new.  Our students come from all over the United States and from around the world.  They come from small towns and big cities from farmlands and suburbs.  Though they differ in the color of their skin, income level, gender identity, and religious traditions, our students represent the best of diversity and difference.  Each one contributes to our exploration, discovery and community.  Together we are Otterbein.

Two days ago, the Department of Justice announced plans to revoke the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections after a six-month wind-down.  There are 800,000 young people in our country, often referred to as Dreamers, who were brought to the United States while they were children.  They now fear deportation from the only country they’ve ever known.  They are our neighbors, friends, colleagues, and classmates.

Otterbein University, in its vision statement, declares a commitment to contribute to the common good, and we also recognize that where we stand matters.  We deplore the action to end DACA, will support our DACA students, and unequivocally stand with any of our students who may be impacted.  Support services are available to all students through Student Affairs and Counseling Services.  We join the chorus of countless voices, including fourteen other independent colleges and universities, in Ohio who call upon the United States Congress to immediately pass bipartisan legislation that would provide a permanent solution that will, at minimum, restore protection for our Dreamers.

Sincerely,

Kathy Krendl
President
Otterbein University
