Dressage Team Competes in National Championship
Department: Equine Science

Otterbein University had a team entry of four riders and three individual entries at the Intercollegiate Dressage Association’s National Championships at Centenary College (New Jersey), April 28-29. The team, made up of Anna Beckman ’13, Mary Evert ’12, Colleen Grant ’12 and Marie Paquette ’14, finished the competition in ninth place.

Junior equine science/pre-veterinary major, Beckman represented Otterbein individually and finished in first place in the Lower Training division. “This was an amazing experience for me. I was able to put my riding skills to the test, and it means a lot to represent Otterbein at this level of competition,” Beckman said. “I was very lucky to have made it this far, and I was proud to show the other schools that Otterbein is not a school to be overlooked at these competitions.”

Senior chemistry major Evert also represented Otterbein individually and finished third in the First Level division. “This was my second time going to nationals and I loved it both times,” she said. “It was a great team bonding trip and a great chance to see the level of competition at other schools. The experience made me very thankful for our coach, Kari Briggs, and the quality of horses at Otterbein.”

Grant also represented Otterbein individually and finished fifth in the Upper Training division.

“It is a tremendous accomplishment to qualify as a team and individual to the national competition,” said Briggs, dressage team coach and assistant director of Equestrian Studies. “Otterbein has been a strong presence at these championships for the last several years, and we have been lucky enough to win several individual championships along the way. Anna’s first place finish was a great personal win for her, and also a great win for the University.”
