BFA Musical Theatre: Apply

Alex Huffman in Les Miserables (2013)

Audition Guidelines for ON CAMPUS Audition Guidelines for UNIFIEDs

Candidates for the B.F.A. degrees in Musical Theatre and Musical Theatre with a Dance Concentration must complete an audition to be considered for admission into the Department of Theatre and Dance. Auditions and interviews take place between December and February, and offers of admission are made by mid March. Students who do not audition before February 21 usually must defer consideration of admission to the following year.

All applicants for the BFA in Musical Theatre and Musical Theatre/Dance are required to submit a pre-screening video in order to be invited to an audition on campus or at one of the National Unified Audition sites.

Application: Pre-Screening

Please do not apply for admission to Otterbein University until you have completed the pre-screening process. If you have applied already, as part of the Common Application for example, do not be concerned. But if you have not yet applied, wait until you hear that you have been invited to audition.

In the pre-screening process, you will record short audition videos and upload them to Acceptd. You will immediately be notified that we have received your materials. Within 7 business days, our Audition Coordinator will send you an e-mail inviting you to audition, or an e-mail notice that you will not receive an invitation. You will be notified either way.  All notifications are done via email. Please note that YouTube links will not be reviewed.

There must be a video uploaded to Acceptd for each of the following criteria:

BFA in Musical Theatre/Dance applicants also need to upload a clip of dance. Demonstrate your technique in ballet, jazz and tap. We want simple demonstrations of technique. Do not send an interpretive piece. Do not send videos of performances. Make a single clip in which you show all your techniques. The clip should not exceed two minutes.  Please note: Only students who wish to declare themselves as a Musical Theatre Major WITH DANCE CONCENTRATION need to submit a dance pre-screen video.

  1. Upload an introduction. Please say your name clearly, the city you’re from, and the pieces that you’re going to do. For monologues, we only need the name of the play and the author.
  2. Upload an up-tempo song, a ballad, and one monologue. One of the songs should be from Musical Theatre repertoire, and the monologue should be from a play. The other song can be from any genre.  Each clip should contain about a minute of material, and together the clips should not exceed three minutes. The introduction is not counted as part of the three minutes.* Please note that we require separate videos for the introduction, monologue, music selection 1, and music selection 2.

*Piano, CD or other audio must accompany singers. Try different distances from the sound source until you get a recording that puts your voice significantly above the accompaniment. We need to be able to hear you. A capella recordings cannot be considered.

    * Our goal is to make the pre-screening possible for students who don’t have access to equipment other than a smart phone or a laptop. We will not be influenced by the professional quality of the video.

    * For advice on choosing and performing your monologues, click here to download a set of Guidelines.  If you have questions about the guidelines or the audition process, please email audition@otterbein.edu.

  3. Upload a resume. Be sure to include activities, leadership, and special skills pertaining to theatre.

  4. Upload a photograph. We prefer a headshot, but if you don’t have one, send us any close-up that you have of yourself.
  5. Upload dance demonstration.   Showcase your technique in ballet, jazz and tap. We want clear demonstrations of technique.  The clip should not exceed two minutes.  Please note: Only students who wish to declare themselves as a Musical Theatre Major w/ Dance Concentration are required to submit a dance pre-screen video. It is optional for other majors.

The Full Monty (2014)DEADLINES

Pre-screens are viewed as they are received. There are a limited number of spaces available for both on-campus and unified auditions, so it is recommended that you pre-screen early to secure the audition date of your choice. We recommend submitting your pre-screen at least 30 days prior to your preferred audition date.
Thursday, January 1, 2015 is the final date to submit a pre-screen for the 2015-2016 school year.  Late pre-screens will not be processed, please plan for weather and/or technical delays.

We will begin accepting pre-screenings on September 1, 2014. To set up an account and submit your pre-screening materials to Acceptd, click here.

If and when you are invited to audition in person, you will need to apply for admission to Otterbein University. Please do not apply for admission until you have been invited to audition. Our Admissions Liaison, Elizabeth Doyle, will be in touch with you. Any questions about the admission process, including financial aid, should be directed to her. She can be reached at edoyle@otterbein.edu or at 614-823-1219. University admission decisions are made at the same time as BFA offers.
