Otterbein Students in Vienna, Austria (2013)

Group photo of the students in ViennaStudents enrolled in SYE 4100: 1990--Vienna--2000: Culture, Conflict, and Identity in Central Europe at the Turn of Two Centuries are studying the culture, conflict, and identity, the contexts and consequences of being Viennese in these two remarkable historic moments, 1900 and the years following 2000.

The streets of this imperial capital in 1900 were exploding with energy, wealth, sex, intellect, and power. Coffee house patrons rubbed shoulders with such giants as Freud, Mahler, Klimt, Schnitzler, and Wittgenstein. Now, in the years following 2000, recovered from the devastation of war and the straightjacket of the fallen Iron Curtain, Vienna is again a magnet for bright, ambitious young people from the new lands of the European Union, from Prague, Budapest, and Warsaw.

A resident might either fear the city's being overrun by unwanted outsiders, or welcome it as a return to "normal times" when Vienna was the empire's capital, or both. In fact, not unlike our own country, Austria is engaged in an intense debate about immigration and multi-culturalism.
