Be a responsible computer user. Here are some guidelines to help keep your computer and the Otterbein network virus-free:
Keep your operating system and software up to date:
Check for software updates, respond to update notifications or have updates installed automatically. Updates are designed to protect your system and keep software features running properly. This applies to Windows and OS X systems.
Use and update your anti-virus software:
All computers connected to the Otterbein network are required to have anti-virus software. If you have a paid subscription or trial version, make sure it has not expired.This also applies to both Windows and OS X systems. Make sure your virus protection updates automatically or manually keep file definitions current to ensure your computer is protected.
Run a routine virus scan:
Remove viruses as soon as they are found. If your computer appears infected with a virus, use your anti-virus software to remove the virus (and possibly repair any damage it may have done). For Windows, try using your system restore and go back in time right before the infection! If using OS X, use your virus scanner to remove or consider re-installing the OS. If you are having difficulty removing the virus, disconnect your computer from the network and contact the ITS Help Desk at 614-823-3100.
Install a malware remover:
Try a free one like Malwarebytes. Run an on demand complete scan of your computer (all drives, all files) at least once a week. Malwarebytes works on Windows and OS X. Make sure you download new updates/definitions first to catch new infections or you are running the same scan over and over!
Do not click on any popup windows: Some malware pretends it is a protection program and found something on your computer! If it is not from your own program, do not click on it.. Instead use [ctrl] [alt] [delete], open task manager and end the popup there. This is the safest way to avoid getting infected!
Browser settings and maintenence:
Set your web browser security setting to Medium. In Internet Explorer, click on Tools/Internet Options and then click the Security tab. The Intranet setting can be set to Medium-Low or Medium-High. Then click the OK button. Do not add browser toolbar helpers. Delete cookies and temporary Internet files regularly.
Some unscrupulous web sites can install Active X controls found in interactive web pages or prompt you for installation. Do not install any software unless you trust the site and use Active X filtering in your Internet browser settings.
Some viruses are spread through file sharing networks such as eDonkey, BitTorrent and Gnutella. If you share, you are making your computer vulnerable to viruses and other intrusions. Turn off file sharing if not needed. If file sharing is required, use ACLs (Access Control Lists) and password protection to limit access. Disable anonymous access to shared folders. Grant access only to user accounts with strong passwords to folders that must be shared.
When AutoPlay is turned off, you are prompted to choose what you want to do when you insert digital media into your computer. You can scan the media with your virus protection program before opening it.
Protect access to your computer or Internet device:
Shut down, lock your logon and/or put a passcode on before leaving your computer or Internet device unattended. Make sure it requires a password or passcode to access. Students are responsible for all activity on their computers and will be held responsible for any violations to Acceptable Use Policy while using the Otterbein network.
Practice strong password policy:
Create strong passwords and do not use the same one for every account. Change passwords regularly and anytime you fear one may have been compromised.
Practice safe emailing:
Do not respond to phishing emails. Information Technology will not ask you in an email for your password or personal information. Don't open email attachments or click on web site addresses in emails unless you really know what you're opening. Contact the business or institution directly outside the email if you have any doubt. Delete spam and suspicious emails; don't open, forward or reply to them.
