Campus Life

What to bring

Technology Checklist

Before you come to campus:

  • Verify that your computer is running Windows 7 or better. For Macs, run 10.6x (Snow Leopard) or better.
  • Configure your computer so that it has automatic Windows updates enabled. Update all Macintosh software.
  • If you have shared folders on your computer, make sure they contain no copyrighted material (such as songs, pictures or movies). Computer shares should be turned off due to the risk they have for spreading viruses. Your Office365 OneDrive is encouraged for sharing files for collaborative work and personal file storage.
  • Remove all malware from your Mac or Windows computer using MalwareBytes.
  • Make sure you have virus protection installed on your Mac or Windows computer. Windows 7 and newer should have Defender already installed with the operating system. We recommend Sophos for OS X systems.
  • Using your antivirus software run a complete virus scan on your computer and remove any found viruses.
  • Pack your computer.
  • Pack all of your computer's documentation.
  • Pack a CAT-5 Ethernet cable or better (12-20 foot length recommended).
  • Pack the power cables and AC adapters for all of your hardware.
  • Pack a surge protector/power strip.
  • Pack the technical support telephone numbers for your hardware and software manufacturers.
  • Pack your printer (optional).
  • Pack the printer cable (if you're bringing a printer). Campus Wi-Fi printing not supported.
  • Pack extra paper, toner or ink for your printer (if you're bringing a printer).
  • Pack a notebook lock (recommended).
  • Pack all of your software's installation discs. Pirated copies are not acceptable.
  • Pack all of your software's CD/product keys for re-installation.

Once you arrive on campus:

  • Activate your Otterbein network and Gmail account (you can also do this before you arrive on campus). Be sure to write down a password hint should you forget your password.
  • Logon to Office365 with username@otterbein.edu and network password. Download Office 2016 to your computer if you don't have it yet. Install the Office apps on your tablet and smart phone.
  • If you're living in a residence hall, plug the Ethernet cord into the wall jack or use wireless.
  • Connect your computer to the network. Join OtterbeinU or eduroam WiFi with your username and network (Ozone) password.
  • Visit the computer labs.
  • Practice logging on to OZone (portal to other on-line resources and news and information).
  • Practice the second way to navigate - individually to Blackboard, Banner and Webmail via the main page and the Resources link in the upper right corner.
  • Familiarize yourself with your Gmail and Google Apps
  • Logon to Office365 with username@otterbein.edu and network password and practice using your OneDrive cloud account. Set up a unique folder for each class you are registered for. This is where you should save your homework assignments.
  • Check out your Otternet page located in the A-Z index of OZone. Check out the w/pix icon to see pictures and names of your classmates!
