Interlibrary Loan

Who is entitled to use the service?

Interlibrary Loan service is designed to serve the research needs of Otterbein University faculty, staff and students. Alumni and community patrons may also use ILL if they become Friends of the Library and are responsible for any fees we are assessed for acquiring an item. It can take article requests up to 5 days and material requests between 7-10 days from the date of your request to arrive. Occasionally there are items that we are not able to borrow and if this is the case you will be notified by email. Any requests for books available through OPAL or OhioLINK will be canceled and your item will be re-requested through that catalog.

Distance Education Students: Access to Journals in Otterbein's Library

We can send interlibrary loan articles directly to your email account. Additionally, the interlibrary loan department will provide distance education students with articles from print journals owned by Otterbein. These articles will also be delivered to your email account.

What you must do:

  1. You must be able to access the online ILL form. This requires a cardinal card.
  2. You must indicate that you are a distance education student in the cited in: field.
This service is only for distance education students who are unable to regularly come to campus. Any requests for locally owned articles made by faculty, staff, or non-distance learning students are automatically cancelled. The only way we know you are distance education is if you indicate your status on the ILL form.
  3. Email. We prefer that you use your Otterbein email account. However, if you have a preferrred address (such as myname@yahoo.com) you can enter that information in the Cited in: field as well. If for any reason your preferred address does not work, we will then send the article to your Otterbein account. For more information about accessing your Otterbein Email account, click here.

Request Forms: Books, Videos, Music

Before you submit your Interlibrary loan request,  please check OPAL and OhioLINK

We will not process your request if the items are available through OPAL or OhioLINK.

If you can't find what you need in OPAL or OhioLINK, please choose one of the following options:

Please provide complete, accurate citations, without abbreviations. The source of your citation ("Cited in:" ) is used to verify the accuracy of the citation and to suggest possible sources for acquiring the item. If this is not included, we may have to contact you if we need further information. If your requests are not complete, they may be canceled. Please contact the Reference Department for help in completing citations or to check relevant databases.

If you have any other questions or concerns, contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 614.823.3072.

When materials arrive you will be notified by email. If your email address is not on record, we will call and leave a message. You can also look up your loan status by viewing your patron record.

Items that cannot be sent through email can be picked up at the Library Circulation Desk whenever the library is open. You must present a valid ID when picking up material.

Request Charges

Most book or article requests are free. Occasionally, however, we must use a supplier that charges an additional fee. In this case the library will pay the first 20 dollars for student requests or the first 12 dollars for faculty requests. You will be required to pay the difference. Faculty may charge their department for any additional amount. If you are going to be charged for a request, we will notify you about the amount before we obtain the item. As mentioned above, Friends are responsible for the full amount of any additional fee.

Loan Periods

The length of time you may have the borrowed material and any restrictions on the use of this material are determined by the lending library. If you need more time, some libraries will extend (renew) your requests. Contact the Otterbein Interlibrary Loan Office to make a renewal. Keep in mind that a renewal should be submitted before the due date indicated on the book wrapper. It is important that books are returned on time to remain in good standing with the lending institution. You will be fined .50/day for all overdue ILL materials. Questions? Call the Interlibrary Loan Office at 823-1164

Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (TITLE 17, United States Code) governs the making of reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse a copying order if, in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
