Finding the gifts of ALL of our residents, including many who have been overlooked, and connecting them is vital to building our community. John McKnight shared with us how many communities are doing this.
John
McKnight is a Professor of Education and Social Policy and Co-Director of
the Asset-Based Community Development Institute of Northwestern University.
For nearly three decades, John has conducted research on social service
delivery systems, health policy, community organizations, neighborhood policy,
and institutional racism. He currently directs research projects focused
on asset-based neighborhood development and methods of community building
by incorporating marginalizes people.
Much of John's recent work on asset-based community development is captured in McKnight's co-authored book, Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community's Assets (1993), which has circulated through a broad range of community, government, business, nonprofit, and educational institutions in the United States and Canada. Articles McKnight has written over the past two decades were published in The Careless Society (1995).

We Dance Together: Art Exhibit,
Reception and Presentation

To honor the memory of Erin McKenzie, we invited Candee Basford, a nationally known consultant, activist, speaker, educator, and artist to present "We Dance Together: A Painted Essay About My Education With Katie." This reception, presentation, and exhibit occurred during National Library Week in 2006. The exhibit included ten exquisite watercolor and fabric images that revealed the lessons Basford learned, beginning with her discovery of her daughter's disability and continuing for the next twenty-six years, that weave lessons of love, relationships, prejudice, ambiguity and more.
