Tansey, John Webinar, Wiley Author Series: Helping Foster Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Biochemistry. Providing an equitable learning experience is an important and constant challenge for all educators to understand and address. Given current and ongoing societal, environmental, and systemic issues, it is vital that DEI is being addressed and discussed in science courses like Biochemistry. Integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion can enrich students’ learning and empower them for their future careers. Tansey will discuss important topics such as: Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in biochemistry, celebrating diversity in biochemistry, and navigating societal and ethical issues in courses. The paper, “Infrastructures and Communities in Maria Graham’s Journal of a Residence in Chile During the Year 1822,” explores contrasting views of Chile’s ports, roads, and railways as they existed in the imperial imaginary and in reality. As Graham encounters the practical challenges of Britain’s desire for modern infrastructures within Chile’s diverse and rugged geographies, she also examines the cultural costs of British infrastructural “progress” for Chile’s indigenous peoples. The paper, “Beyond the Sickroom: Inclusion, Exclusion, and Discourses of Illness in Maria Graham’s Travel Journals,” analyzes the important therapeutic, cultural, and narrative work accomplished through Graham’s recurring references to her own and others’ encounters with illness during her world travels.
