The OtterFit Program

The OtterFit Health and Fitness Program is an opportunity for the faculty and staff of Otterbein University to use the services of an Exercise Science and Health Promotion major as their personal trainer, participate in group training classes and enhance wellness through educational programming and events. OtterFit has been formatted in a way to best benefit our students! For the fall semesters, we are doing a virtual training program to allow our students to get experience in the ever evolving virtual personal training space. Spring semesters are in person typical personal training plus the general exercise programming. This will continue as such year to year to keep up to date with appropriate student experience outcomes through the general fitness and wellness governing bodies. If you have questions about this set up, please do not hesitate to ask!

As this is a popular program, it will be first come, first served in the sign-ups. Dr. Emily Post will be in contact with you once you complete this survey. This link will close for Fall sign ups on August 31st and Spring sign ups on January 31st each year. Any Otterbein faculty or staff may sign up!

Pre-Screening, Safety, and Liability

For safety and legal reasons, if you answer YES to any PAR-Q+ questions (#1-7) due to a medical condition/issue, we will need to gather physician clearance before you can participate in OtterFit. This can be a doctor’s note saying it is safe for you to participate or a more drawn out medical history clearance form. You can see these 7 questions below on this link: https://eparmedx.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/PARQPlus2024Fillable.pdf. If you answer yes to any, please move forward with getting physician clearance now so we can get you started in OtterFit ASAP when you sign up! If you think you need physician clearance, please attempt to get that before the semester starts so we can get you started as soon as possible.

Personal Training

Novice Personal Training, Free of Charge, including pre-assessment, 8 weeks of training, and post-assessment

Personal training with a novice student trainer is available free of charge. Training sessions are 1-2x/wk for 60 minutes on non-consecutive days. Training programs will expose clients to a variety of training methods following the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for Quantity and Quality of Exercise (Garber et al., 2011). Sessions will be individualized but will include modes of training the students are learning in class. Each session will include resistance, cardiovascular, and flexibility training. Faculty and staff are invited to participate as learning partners with the students while they complete their Exercise Science practicum hours.
